Volunteers Needed: Argentina Social Services Volunteers

Program Duration:  Six Weeks

Spring session dates:  May 31- July 5th

Summer session dates: July 7-August 18;  July 22-September 2.

Project Fee: $5000 CAD (tax Deductable). Cost includes:

  • Flight

  • On-site Canadian supervisor

  Strong likelihood of receiving a $1000 Ve’ahavta scholarship towards the Project Fee.

Program Purpose: Argentina, home to the largest Jewish community in Latin America, is struggling with the after-effects of an economic crisis.  It is estimated that 25% of  Argentina’s  Jewish community is living below the poverty line.

Ve’ahavta is working with Jewish social assistance agencies in Buenos Aires who are working to help the Jewish community and non-Jewish community  by providing food, clothing, medicines, rent subsidies, as well as counselling and community-building.

Program Description

Volunteers have the opportunity to experience a new country, language, and culture. Volunteers will also be placed in various agencies that serve those in need in Buenos Aires.

Placement options will include:

  1. Baby Help Centre (Care & Development for Children and At-Risk Pregnant Mothers) (Buenos Aires)
  2. Le Dor Va Dor Home: (Supportive Care Residence for Older Adults)(Buenos Aires)
  3. Pharmacy Distribution Centre (pharmaceutical donation management) (Buenos Aires)
  4. Support Program for University Students (assist with program coordination and event planning) (Buenos Aires)
  5. Teaching ESL to Argentine Students through Hillel

Desired Experience (not mandatory)  

  • Spanish language skills
  • Cross cultural experience
  • Ability to work well both independently and part of a team
  • Self motivated and able to take initiative
  • Interest in social issues
  • Responsible, flexible and dedicated

Ve’ahavta will provide logistical support, pre-departure training, book travel and insurance, full orientation and supervision in the field, coordination of language training, cultural/social exchange activities, and arrangement of accommodation.

All applicants are required to complete a volunteer application form, which includes a CV, two letters of reference, a personal statement, and a deposit fee of $150. All applicants must attend an in-person interview. Preference will be given to those aged between 21 and 65.
